Hot-swapping a complex device such as a drive or a controller has the potential for a huge number of possible failures. Endless potential problems can be caused by:
- Power rails mating at earlier or later times than expected
- One pin mating before another
- Connection bounce
… and more. Many of these problems are easily found, but some will only occur under specific circumstances, or only after 500+ plug cycles. Trying to debug a fault like this by hand is very tedious – and expensive in engineering time.
Quarch tools have been proven over 10 years and are now the industry standard for hot-plug testing and physical layer fault injection.
“E8 is committed to building solutions of the highest quality. Quarch’s unique test tools are a simple and effective way to help test our new products.”

Automate for efficient, fast testing
Quarch hot-swap modules can automate your testing process, allowing you to:
- Run unattended, overnight tests
- Perform every test repeatedly, with highly accurate timing
- Simulate any possible hot-plug scenario; this allows you to test corner cases, narrowing down the exact cause of a problem (or simply ensuring that there are none to be found).
Create physical layer faults for comprehensive testing
A wide range of physical layer faults can be created, allowing you to test dual redundant paths and fault detection systems. With individual switches on each pin, you can fail a port, a lane, or even just one side of a differential pair. In addition to creating permanent fault scenarios, you can create intermittent or glitched faults with glitch times as low as 50uS.
Perform industry-standard hot-plug tests
Our hot-swap modules are used by almost every major storage company, and are part of the mandatory testing schedule for NVMe SFF drives at the IOL Plugfests.
“The support that Quarch is providing to the UNH-IOL and the NVMe Integrators List program is enabling us to implement new types of testing that help prove the reliability and robustness of NVMe. The Quarch Torridon tool allows us to test the hot plug features that are so important for enterprise SSD implementations. We're excited to be working with Quarch. Quarch is a valuable partner in our efforts to expand and improve the NVMe Integrators List program.”
David Woolf, Research and Development of Storage and Mobile Technologies, UNH-IOL
Solutions for every interface
Quarch have modules to support every major interface: PCIe, U.2, M.2, SAS, SATA, SFP, QSFP, LAN, SBB, USB and more.
